Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist

Google Business Profile optimization means making your profile accurate, complete, current, and consistent enough for customers, Google, and AI systems to trust it.

This checklist is not a magic ranking button.

There isn’t one.

If there were, someone would have made a terrible webinar about it by now.

Google Business Profile optimization is really just structured housekeeping.

Not glamorous.

Very useful.

1. Verify the Profile

  • ☐ Claim the correct profile.
  • ☐ Complete verification.
  • ☐ Confirm the correct owner and manager access.
  • ☐ Remove access for former employees or agencies.
  • ☐ Resolve duplicate or outdated profiles.

If you do not control the profile, you do not really control one of your most important local visibility assets.

2. Confirm Core Business Information

  • ☐ Use the real business name.
  • ☐ Confirm the correct address or service area.
  • ☐ Confirm the correct phone number.
  • ☐ Add the correct website URL.
  • ☐ Keep hours accurate.
  • ☐ Add holiday or special hours when needed.

This is the boring stuff.

The boring stuff is usually where trust starts.

3. Choose the Right Categories

  • ☐ Select the most accurate primary category.
  • ☐ Add relevant secondary categories.
  • ☐ Avoid categories that do not describe the business.
  • ☐ Review categories when services change.

Categories help Google understand what kind of business you are.

Do not treat them like a wish list.

4. Document Services and Products

  • ☐ Add all real Services.
  • ☐ Add Products where appropriate.
  • ☐ Use clear names and descriptions.
  • ☐ Keep offerings aligned with your website.
  • ☐ Remove discontinued services or products.

If your Business Profile says one thing and your website says another, you have created unnecessary confusion.

5. Add Real Photos

  • ☐ Add logo and cover images.
  • ☐ Add exterior photos for storefronts.
  • ☐ Add interior photos where useful.
  • ☐ Add team, vehicle, project, or product photos.
  • ☐ Replace outdated images.

Photos are visual proof.

Real beats perfect.

6. Manage Reviews

  • ☐ Ask satisfied customers for honest reviews.
  • ☐ Respond to positive reviews.
  • ☐ Respond professionally to negative reviews.
  • ☐ Watch for recurring customer themes.
  • ☐ Report reviews that clearly violate policy.

Reviews are not decoration.

They are evidence.

7. Monitor Q&A

  • ☐ Check the Q&A section regularly.
  • ☐ Answer common questions clearly.
  • ☐ Correct inaccurate public answers.
  • ☐ Turn recurring questions into website FAQs.

If customers keep asking the same question, your documentation probably needs work.

8. Use Posts When You Have Something Useful to Say

  • ☐ Announce real updates.
  • ☐ Share new services or products.
  • ☐ Publish seasonal information.
  • ☐ Avoid repetitive sales posts.

Posts are updates.

Not a ranking spell.

9. Use Messaging Carefully

  • ☐ Enable Messaging only if someone will manage it.
  • ☐ Respond quickly.
  • ☐ Use clear answers.
  • ☐ Move complex conversations to phone or email.

Do not open an inbox nobody plans to answer.

That is not customer service.

That is a tiny disappointment machine.

10. Keep Everything Consistent

  • ☐ Match your website information.
  • ☐ Match important Local Citations.
  • ☐ Match structured data where applicable.
  • ☐ Keep service names consistent.
  • ☐ Review the profile after major business changes.

Consistency reduces uncertainty.

Uncertainty is bad for Local SEO and even worse for AI recommendations.

Firm IQ Definition

At Firm IQ, Google Business Profile optimization is the ongoing work of keeping your most important Google-owned business asset accurate, complete, current, and aligned with the rest of your business documentation.

It is not a one-time setup task.

It is maintenance.

The kind that prevents much bigger problems later.

Here’s what we’ve learned: a well-optimized profile does not make a weak business strong. It makes a real business easier to understand, easier to trust, and easier to recommend.
